Melting of Diamond
While a graduate student at Cornell University, as a result of a happy accident, I melted a diamond for the first time in history. This involved using an apparatus called a Diamond Anvil Cell and putting carbon at pressures of hundreds of thousands of atmospheres and thousands of degrees (by means of an infra-red laser).
